Development of hybrid rice in Vietnam

For recent years, introduction of hybrid rice contributed to increasing rice productivity ensuring food security in our country. At present, the acreage under hybrid rice is 450,000 ha expanding from northern provinces to central and Western highland ones. It is planned to increase mean rice yield by 1 T/ha and maintain hybrid rice growing area of about 500,000 ha by year 2010. However, the greatest difficulties for growing hybrid rice in the past were the hybrid seeds to be imported from China and lack of equipments for scientists to conduct researches in hybrid rice. In coming years, we have to solve these problems to develop hybrid rice production sustainably, first of all, we have to possitively produce hybrid seeds of rice, along with transfer of technology of producing hybrid seeds to farmers. In addition, more attention and investment should be made to train scientists, technicians and to equip modern facilities for researches on production of hybrid seeds of two and three - line.
