Seepage analysis of an earth dam by use of the measured froundwater level

Site investigation of a 200-year-old superannuated earth dam exclusively used for irrigation purpose was carried out to solve leakage problem. Water level of reservoir and water table in four boreholes were monitored for measuring the phreatic line and crosssection. Three cases of impervious earthfill of the dam were assumed from results of the site investigation and from the literature. The coefficients of permeability in a core and transition were identified using output error criterion as the minimization of a norm of the difference between measured and calculated heads at specific observation points in the three cases. The optimal zoning in case 3 and optimal coefficient of permeability values were estimated by aligning the measured and calculated water tables of the dam.
