Incorporation of green manure dhaincha (Sesbania aculeata) along with inorganic fertilizer N, P and K applied at sub-optimal doses (50 percent and 75 percent of the recommended dose) was on par with the recommended dose (100 percent) of inorganic fertilizer in improvement of yield of both rice and wheat grown in a cropping sequence. Uptake of nutrients (N, P and K) was also higher when dhaincha was used in combination with inorganic fertilizer. An amount of 50-57 kg N /ha could be saved due to incorporation of dhaincha in situ before growing of the rice crop. With the application of dhaincha, residual soil fertility in terms of available N, P and K was also improved compared to application of inorganic fertilizer only. Inclusion of the grain legumes black gram (Phaseolus mungo) and lentil (Lens culinaris) did not show any added advantage in increasing the yield but enriched the soil fertility after two crop cycles.
