In order to develop an integrated use of organic and inorganic fertilizer technology for wetland rice, a long-term field experiment was initiated at the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute, Gazipur. Six trials were conducted in a wet-dry-fallow cropping pattern. Four N rates 0, 30, 60 and 90 kg/ha in wet season and 0, 40, 80 and 120 kg/ha in dry season and the application of rice straw, cowdung and Dhaincha (Sesbania aculeata) at the rate of 5 ton/ha (dry weight basis) used as treatments in various combinations. Organic residues were applied only to the wet season crop each year. In terms of total yearly yield the application of Dhaincha at the rate of 5 ton/ha (dry weight basis) once a year, prior to wet season planting, along with 140 kg urea-N/ha per year (80 kg for dry and 60 kg for wet season) and the recommended doses of P, K and S, may give a yield of about 11 ton/ha year in a wet-dry-fallow cropping regime on a moderate fertile soils. This practice will allow a saving of 150 kg urea/ha per year.
