Diversity and abundance of squirrels living on the periphery of peat swamp forest were investigated between 1994 and 1995. Eight transect-lines around the periphery of forest, length totally 12.1 km, were employed to secure data on sighting angle, sighting distance, and species of squirrel. Absolute abundance was calculated based on Hayne Indicator. Four species of squirrels were sighted along the lines in the course of 2-year study. They were Callosciurus prevostii, Sundasciurus lowii, C. notatus and S. tenuis. The first two species have been classified a predominately primary forest species, and the others have been frequently reported foraging in the plantation and on forest's edge. Relative abundance was respectively C. notatus, S. tenuis and S. lowii/C. prevostii. C. notatus was the only species whose number of sighting was theoretically enough to calculate absolute abundance. Its density was 93.01+-39.58 individuals per square kilometre in 1994 (number of sighting, n=28) and 107.82+-49.75 individuals per square kilometre in 1995 (n=33). The visibility of this species along the lines was 20.096 metre (SD=14.027, n=61).
