The Swiss Federal Office for Agriculture has defined six objectives in its research plan for Agroscope over the 2004 ' 2007 period. Based on these objectives, Agroscope FAT Tänikon has established four research priorities for the four-year work programme: -Economic analyses and forecasts for the agricultural sector-Bases and concepts for future-oriented farm and production structures-Engineering and economics of grassland farming-Sustainable and animal-friendly housing systems for farm animals. Starting from these research priorities, which reflect the FAT's positioning within Agroscope, the control and enforcement duties specified in the agricultural research ordinance and customers' needs, FAT has gathered together some research ideas. These research ideas have been consolidated into project outlines which have then been evaluated according to the criteria of customer benefit, innovation / scientific interest, orientation to research priority and existing know-how, with the involvement of the Supporting Group of Experts. The outcome of this process is a programme of work comprising 28 projects focused on the following research areas: agricultural sector, agricultural structure, animal housing systems, economics and ecology. These projects also indicate the FAT's key competence at the interface between biological and technological systems and their economic aspects.
