To optimize the seed production of garden thyme (Thymus vulgaris L.) belonging to the thymol chemotype, 57 new hybrids were produced in 1999 and tested during the following three years in mountain regions. Results of the 20 best accessions concerning seed production, tolerance to freezing, dry matter and essential oil yield were compared to four commercial varieties Varico 1, Varico 2, Deutsche Winter (CH) Fenaco, and Deutsche Winter (D). A number of new garden thyme hybrids were more robust and had higher yields in dry matter and in essential oil than the two standards Deutsche Winter. Compared to both Varico varieties, their seed quality was superior and their dry matter and essential oil production was comparable or even higher. These new garden thyme varieties are actually multiplied by Delley Seeds and Plants (DSP) and will be commercialised in 2006.
