With the Farm Accountancy Data Network, the TARIFAT machine costs programme, the PROOF labour economics calculation model and the Modular Construction Standards for Farm Building Costs, the Agricultural Economics division of the FAT has access to excellent research data for conducting economic analyses and assessments on the process, farm and sector levels of agriculture. Thanks to full access to ecological inventories, life cycle assessments can be carried out on various levels. Furthermore, the FAT has developed two quantitative economic calculation models - the SILAS sector model and the FARMO farm model - used to forecast the effects of changing agricultural framework conditions. The international context of agriculture is characterised by European integration, globalisation, technological progress and the transition to a knowledge-based society. The national context of agriculture is characterised by pressure from multinationals on the farming sector to make concessions within the framework of the WTO Doha rounds for the further liberalisation of world trade, as well as by the Swiss Confederation_s introduction of austerity measures and the continued support of Swiss agricultural policy by a majority of the population. Given the effects of these trends and developments, issues related to Switzerland_s potential adhesion to the EU will be among the main research priorities in future.
