The forecasting of the degree of occurrence of major field crops pests in Vojvodina Province has been regularly reported since 1978. By inspection of soil samples from fields where cereals and sugar beet were grown in 2002, the following average number/square meter was recorded: 4.9 wireworms (Elateridae), 2.9 whitegrubs (Scarabaeidae), 0.22 caterpillars of Scotia spp., 0.020 adults of Zabrus tenebrioides, 1.3 adults of Bothynoderes punctiventris and 0.17 chrysalides of Mamestra spp. Scrobipalpa ocellatella was found at all inspected sugar beet fields, on 60.3 of plants, with 1.27 larvae per plant. In late autumn, 13.7 adults/square meter of senn pest (Eurygaster and Aelia), was found on overwintering sites. The number and injury (about 25-80 of maize plants) of ECB (Ostrinia nubilalis) increased, as well as the number and injuries of Helicoverpa armigera on maize (60-80 of plants) and on vegetables. Population density of the new corn pest, WCR (Diabrotica virgifera virgifera), was similar to 2001, but lower than before 2000, as well as the area of damage (except in NW Backa).
