The forecasting of the degree of occurrence of major field crop pests in the Vojvodina Province (Serbia and Montenegro) has been regularly reported since 1978. By inspection of soil samples from fields where cereals and sugar beet were grown in 2003, the following average number/square meter was recorded: 2.0 wireworms (Elateridae), 1.0 whitegrubs (Scarabaeidae), 0.13 caterpillars of Scotia spp., 0.006 adults of Zabrus tenebrioides, 3.9 adults of Bothynoderes punctiventris and 0.0 chrysalides of Mamestra spp. Scrobipalpa ocellatella was found at all inspected sugar beet fields, on 93.3 of plants, with 4.6 larvae per plant. In late autumn, 52.9 adults/square meter of senn pest (Eurygaster and Aelia), was found on overwintering sites. The number and injury of cotton bollworm (Helicoverpa armigera) significantly increased in 2003 on maize (75-100 of plants), sunflower (80-100), soybean (42-85), tobacco and vegetables (pepper, tomato, string bean etc.) and flowers (roses, chrysanthemum etc.). The number and injuries of ECB (Ostrinia nubilalis) were similar or slightly higher to previous year, as well as the population density of the new corn pest, WCR (Diabrotica virgifera virgifera).
