This paper describes the photocatalytic removal of the herbicide mecoprop from aqueous solution in the presence of TiO2 nanoparticles. The effects of the initial mecoprop concentration and content of TiO2 were investigated. The literature data showed that the photodecomposition of the aromatic ring with chlorine as substituent takes place simultaneously with chlorine evolution, which is also in our case (1,2). Because of that the course of mecoprop degradation was followed by potentiometric titration of released chloride. It was estimated that the rate of mecoprop decomposition can be described in terms of the Langmuir-Hinshelwood kinetic model.
