A very important step toward integrated water management in the basin is the introduction of a distributed management support system, which would provide information, engineering input, and the support of experts in the decision-making process. The distributed water management support system for the Drina basin comprises several mutually interactive parts, which may for convenience be divided into two major entities: data acquisition, transmission, and archiving system, and a complex simulation, optimization, and prognostic model. The use of distributed computer systems introduces the possibility of having computer resources and data availability on a larger number of locations, so that physical or logical resources are simultaneously managed from several directions.
