Three epidemiological types of rabies were present in the Province of Vojvodina. Dog-mediated rabies, or its classical urban form, was eradicated by a regular yearly vaccination of dogs with Hempt's brain tissue vaccine in 1957 finally. Fox-mediated, or sylvatic rabies, spread on the territory of Vojvodina from the North in three epizooties, in 1952, 1962, and since the seventies, it has been continuously present in the region. Both types of these rabies forms were transmitted to humans. Human rabies has not been registered since 1964. Insectivorous bat rabies was once diagnosed in 1955, in the bats from the Novi Sad abattoir, whereas human cases were not registered. Today, only fox-mediated rabies is present, and it is occasionally transmitted to domestic animals. Ecological conditions, with high fox population density in Vojvodina, cause that sylvatic rabies have an enzootic form, so that there is only one way for it eradication - oral vaccination of foxes.
