Resistance to low temperatures of autochthonous varieties and selected types of wild apples (Malus sylvestris L.) in Bijelo Polje area [Montenegro (Serbia and Montenegro)]

The paper presents the results of research of content of N, P and K in the bark and the wood of one year old branches and one year old generative rootstocks at Bijelo Polje region, Montenegro, during the winter dormant period from 1996 to 1998. The research was done: 1) on four autochthonous apple varieties (Senabija, Arapka, Pasinka and Sarenika) and nine selected types of wild apples (Malus sylvestris L.); 2) on generative rootstocks of four autochthonous apple varieties (Senabija, Arapka, Pasinka and Sarenika) and nine selected types of wild apples (Malus sylvestris L.). The results of this research showed that the content of the N, P and K depends on genetic characteristics of the variety, namely the type which influences to resistance to low temperatures, which is important regarding aspect of generative rootstocks production. It should be chosen the type 8 and type 1 as the beginning material for the production of qualitative generative rootstocks (main tree) in the sence of resistance to low temperatures, because of average higher level of P and K in the bark and the wood of one year branches and one year old seedlings in the period of winter dormancy. The variety Pasinka could be recommended as a potential parent in this breeding work.
