The aim of this research was to evaluate biologically degradable oils used to lubricate power saws from the viewpoint of their possible occurrence in the environment and to test some methods in order to assess some technical characteristics of the oils. The oil concentration on the soil surface resulting from oil dispersal from the cutting part of the saw was 0.5 g per square m at maximum. Sawdust absorbs 75-77% of oil, 7-13% of oil remains on the surface of cut timber, and 12-16% of oil is spread on the soil surface. The ISO standard method used for measuring thermal oxidation stability of the oils did not give applicable results. On the contrary, the method used to determine the pumping capacity provided significant results.
