Fire damage and forest regeneration in Ghana: forestry inventory and management project of the Ghana Forestry Department.
1994
Hawthorne, W. D.
Since the drought of 1982-83, fire has caused widespread damage in Ghana. Its influence on forest communities is examined on the basis of temporary sample plot inventory results and from a finer detailed regeneration study. Pattern of tree species abundance in burnt and unburnt areas is discussed in relation to natural regeneration, susceptibility to fire damage, logging, and the effects of fire in surrounding farm land. A scale of standardized descriptions of fire-damaged forest is presented and related to regenerative potential, and rehabilitation.
