Red heart is an important factor from a wood utilisation point of view. Beech, a species of special economic importance in Hungary, is especially susceptible of red heart formation. The article reviews the most important results found in literature concerning the formation and economic importance of red heart. The author summaries the different findings and highlights the most important points for the Hungarian wood industries
