This article suggests that the extent of deforestation that has occurred in West Africa during the twentieth century is currently being exaggerated. It presents key findings of detailed research into vegetation change over the past century in Cote d'Ivoire, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ghana, Togo and Benin.
