From an experiment in Ghana to test the efficiency of carbofuran (as Furadan 5G) as an oil palm nursery insecticide, a rate of application at 1.5 g Furadan 5G per plant is recommended as this had no adverse physiological effects on seedlings. The number of pseudococcids per plant was reduced by between 58 and 95% with applications of 1-2 g carbofuran, and the percentage of transplantable seedlings increased by about 6%. The percentage of stunted seedlings decreased with decreasing numbers of pseudococcids. Major nursery pests identified were the curculionid Temnoschoita quadrimaculata [T. quadripustulata] and pseudococcids (Pseudococcus sp.). Minor pests identified were the tettigoniids Arantia rectifolia and Eulioptera reticulata, the gryllid Homeogryllus reticulatus and the acridid Pyrgomorpha sp.
