The study was conducted on lactating cows to find out the effect of hot-dry season on the milk production and rectal temperatures under 2 sets of managemental conditions. A total of 20 lactating cows were divided into 2 groups of 10 each. The cows of group-1 (control) were kept under loose housing system as practiced in the institutes herd, while group-2 cows were kept under the modified shelter which comprised asbestos covering sheets and provision of sand bedding and fan. The rectal temperature during the morning and evening hours of the 2 groups were significantly different during morning and evening hours. Further, the milk produced by the cows under modified shelter system was more in comparison to the loose housing system. The study indicated that providing protection from the high ambient temperature could augment the milk production of the lactating cows. Further, a diurnal rhythm in rectal temperature was observed in both the groups of the cows.
