An experiment was conducted during 1996-97, 1997-98 and 1998-99 at hill campus Ranichauri of G.B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology,Pantnagar. The reults observed on wheat variety HS-240 revealed that highest average grain yield of 18.17 q ha-1 was obtained with sowing under 10% soil moisture level followed by 15.45 q ha-1 at 20% and 15.44 q ha-1 at 25% soil moisture levels. The highest average germination was recorded at 25% soil moisture.Sowing at sub optional moisture i.e. 15% in normal and 20% in dry years produced lower yield.Weights of spike including number of grains per spike were also lowest at 15% moisture level.Broadcast sowing and zero tillage gave lower yield than other treatments, while sowing immediately after harvest of preceding crop gave the highest grain yield (14.98 q ha-1) and favored the plant height at harvest (80.5 cm),spike length (10.1 cm) and number of grains per spike(29.2).
