Studies on combining ability for ten important characters in tomato were conducted through a set of 9x9 diallel cross excluding reciprocals. Significant GCA and SCA variances were observed for different characters except TSS indicating the importance of both additive and non-additive type of gene effects in the expression of these traits. Under high temperature conditions, EC 50534-2-1 and P2-6-1-1 were observed to be best general combiners for most of the traits contributing towards heat tolerance viz. setting percentage per cluster, harvesting span, total and marketable yield per plant. The cross 1-7-1-1 x UC82B was identified as best specific combiner for harvesting span, total and marketable yield per plant, fruit settling per cluster, early ripening and fruit weight. Based upon the present investigation, it is concluded that improvement for heat tolerant attributes in tomato can be accomplished both through pure line breeding as well as through hybrid breeding.
