Terauchi, M. (Tokyo Univ. of Agriculture (Japan))
Kumamoto prefecture is famous for beef cattle, especially cows for breeding management. But Japan agreed to decrease import customs in beef market at the Uruguay round of the GATT negotiation at the end of 1993. The liberalized beef market has caused the decline in beef price level and the decrease in the number, of beef cattle, as Japanese beef cattle management loses out in international competition. In this situation, the time has come for Japanese beef cattle management to decrease productive cost. The main objective of this study is to analyze the feeding system of beef cattle required for the establishment of low cost management in a case study of Aso area, Kumamoto Prefecture. The results of the analysis are summarized as follows : 1) The pasturing for beef cattle feeding is an effective technique to realize a decrease in the production cost for beef cattle production. 2) Especially, for the pasturing technique system to be aimed at a low cost product, pasturing system for all the year round in beef cattle feeding is the most effective technique, with introduction of "Autumn Saved Pasture" and "pasturing in paddy field after harvesting rice".
