"In the coastal area of Kumano-nada, there have been many grounds of large size set-net for about 80 years to catch yellowtail, filefish, squid and others. I adopted both Principal component analysis (PCA) and Cluster analysis for this study, and used the data of species caught in 16 set-net grounds and divided them into 18 groups. As the result of PCA, 18 fish groups were characterized by six principal components. Characteristics of the local distribution of species were estimated by first and second principal components; the former shows the species mainly caught in southern or northern grounds and the latter shows the species in a part of grounds. Secondarily, 16 set-net grounds were characterized by two principal components. The first principal component has positive correlation with all the grounds, therefore shows Size factor. The second principal component has positive and negative correlation with southern and northern grounds, respectively, shows the degree of local color of set-net grounds. As the result of Cluster analysis, 16 set-net grounds were classified into the two types by dendrogram based on the faunal similality of C p index. Type A consists of 6 set-net grounds, and the catch contains high ratio (40%) of yellowtail. Type B consists of 10 set-net grounds, the ratio of yellowtail in the catch is low (14%), and type B was divided into four sub-types."
