"1 The newly bred strawberry cultivar with resistance to anthracnose and sweet tasting quality was named'Sanchiigo'and released from Mie Agri. Res. Cent, in 1999. This cultivar was selected from the progenies of several crosses and self ing of existing three cultivars, 'Aiberry', 'Hokowase'and'Toyonoka'. The female parent was the line'91007'obtained from the selfed seedlings of the hybrid line'90014'which derived from the cross bet ween'Aiberry'and 'Hokowase'. The male parent was the selfed line'90051fderived from self-pollinated seedling of'Toyonoka' (Fig. 1) . 2 At an early stage of the seedlings raised from the cross and selfing, we sprayed the conidial suspension of anthracnose to inoculate and the dead seedlings were removed. The screening of seedlings with firm fruits was carried out in the first year of each clonal selection. The selected lines were used for the parents in the succeeding crosses. These selections and crosses were carried out repeatedly in several generations. It is alike recurrent selection. As the result, the frequency of seedlings with targeted traits was risen with advance in the generations. 3 The resistance to anthracnose in cv. 'Sanchiigo'was very high, but relatively low to Fusarium wilt. The powdery mildew in the field of'Sanchiigo'occurred more often than'Nyoho'and less than'Toyonoka'. 4 The flower buds in'Sanchiigo'began to differentiate in the middle of September, being a few days later than that of'Nyoho', and the first harvest delayed slightly in forcing culture. The fresh weight of'Sanchiigo'fruits was heavier than'Nyoho', resulting in higher yields. 5 'Sanchiigo'fruit was excellent in quality for fresh use because of good tasting, with high content of sugar, weak acidity, juicy and suitable in texture. Furthermore, the characteristics of fruit were bright-red in skin color, completely conical in shape, nearly the same in firmness of cv. 'Nyoho', and high in content of vitamin C."
