"The cultivation of the cabbage and broccoli in Mie prefecture is mainly carried out in paddy fields. The introduction of machine planting system using plug seedlings is effective to save labor. Then we examined the clod size and water content of crushed paddy soil, the row number to be planted in a wide row, planting depth of plug seedlings. The skills of fertilizer application and controlling weeds after the transplanting. In paddy fields of clayey soil, the initial and early growth were retarded under low harrowing-rate mainly due to the reduction of gaseous space in the soil. The crop yields (the weight of head in cabbage and buds in broccoli) were improved greatly 3 times of plowing. Two row planting a ridge was more excellent the growth of cabbage and broccoli than the single row planting in clay soil paddy fields. Especially, the slippage of the head position cabbage plants increased when planted in one row. Although a vigorous plant growth was expectable when plug seedlings were transplanted to the paddy field so as to bury into the soil, the intertillage and the earthing up by about 20 days from the planting made is possible to overcome the growth retardation. In paddy field, the cultivation with only basal application of fertilizer is unsuitable in cropping type of planting on the middle of September and the harvesting on the beginning of following year. Weeds were controlled by the intertillage."
