Abstract The various slope conditions and types of slope failures in the mudstone area were taken into consideration. Then strength measurement tests were carried out on mudstones strongly weathered. fractured or normally Consolidated, or containing a weak-plane, and their strength parameters c and f were obtained. Strength characteristics of each weakened mudstone were identified in the relationship between c and f from the present test results and other data reported previously by the authors. The strength zone for strongly weathered and fractured mudstones was given first by drawing the small area that reaches from the strength of c = 37.5kN/square m and f = 35.0 deg close to the normally-consolidated strength in the c - f figure. The parameters of normally-consolidated strength and residual strength were within the range of f = 23-30 deg and f = 9 deg -l7 deg, respectively.
