Durability of chemically modified particleboard placed in three different soils of two moisture contents

Particleboard stakes were treated with either an isocyanate or phenol formaldehyde and exposed in soil beds comprising three different soil types at two moisture content levels. The treatment effected a delay in colonisation of wood destroying fungi in some samples. Effect of soil type on fungal colonisation and decay was significant. The red clay-loam soil was the most destructive followed by black clay soil then sandy loam last. The effect of water holding capacities of the test samples was also significant. Basidiomycetes attack was favoured by the lower soil moisture content, whereas soft rot was prevalent in the higher moisture content soils. Most stakes however, had soft rot decay towards the above-ground portion. This is because the soil at the bottom of the bins had higher moisture content than at the top. Samples in the black soil had the highest failure due to Basidiomycetes. In the red soil, soft rot attack was highest.
