This thesis is based on a research which was carried out to determine the incidence and severity of heart-rot in four over-mature plantations of Cypress (Cupressus lusitanica) Mill at Kiandogoro forest station on the Aberdare ranges. The heart-rot causeing fungi were isolated from the decayed wood samples and characterized based on their cultural and hphal differences while the genetic variation among them was assessed using Random Amplified Polymorphic DANA (RAPD) analysis. Systematic sampling was used to determine the tree stocking density and to estimate the heart-rot incidence per plantation. Each tree in a 0.1 Ha sample plot was examined for nine different external indicators of heart-rot namely: Open cavities, closed cavaities, sporophores, swollen stems, swollen nots, forking, stripped bark, moss matt, and broken top. An increment borer was then used to probe each tree at the butt-section to confirm the presence of heart-rot in this section.
