1997
Luvanda, A. M.
In this report a socioeconomic survey was conducted in Embu, Kilifi and Vihiga districts of Kenya to determine the impact of the leucaena psyllid, and to assess farmers, attitudes to the pest and its control. A total of 134 farmers were intervewed. Most of them growing leucaena are small scale, with the primary use of leucaena being fodder for livestock. Most reported attack by psyllid, which is probably present wherever leucaena is grown. They reported the main damage caused to be reduction of luecana biomas and as a result drop in milk yield of cows using the fodder. No effective control methods are in use, although farmers have tried various remedies including pesticides. Farmers have received litte advice on how to cope with the pest, and were unware of the natural enemies of the pest. Despite the damage caused by the psyllid, many farmers are still intrested in planting the crop, particularly if solution to the problem can be found.
