Twenty-four phenylphenalenone-phytoalexins were isolated from the peels of banana fruits Musa acuminana and M. balbisiana. Absolute configurations of the optically active phenylphenalehones were determined by chemical conversions to L -arabitol pentaacetate. The biosynthetic pathway for phenylphenalenones in banana fruit is proposed on the basis of the results of feeding experiments. Biosyntheses of phenylphenalenones in other plants and diarylheptanoids are also discussed.
