Molecular taxonomy of Saintpaulia rupicola and the genus Saintpaulia

African Violets, genus Saintpaulia, (Gesneriaceae), are endemic top coastal Kenya and northern Tanzania. The taxonomic status of the wild species of the African Violet remains unresolved. In addition there is an almost complete lack of knowledge about the genetic variation among natural populations of the African Violets. This paper present the project which has been embarked to assess the chloroplast DNA variation among these African Violets, with special emphasis on the only four remaining natural populations of Saintpaulia B. L. Burtt and Saintpaulia sp. nov. from coastal Kenya.
