User trends and attitudes to management of the Kakamega Forest reserve | Social-economics and rural development

This is a report of a study set out in the KIFCON's socio-economist which reports that local use of the Kakamega Forest is intensive and extensive, the majority of its users resides within an area several kilometers from the boundary who exercise customary propriety over the area despite government controls of 1959 and 1964 under the forest act which allowed resident of Kakamega some unlicensed use of the forest. KIFCON notes that policy changes over the last decade led to the cassation of the 'Shamba' system and permits for livestock grazing have dramatically altered the relationships and rights of the local people who dwell around the forest. KIFCON aims to reduce local use to non-damaging sustainable levels in its Rural Development approach. This is achieved through KIFCON helping local Villages in their 57 villages around the forest reserve to obtain alternative sources of income.
