Mulching and its effects on tree survival and growth in the ASALS of Kenya

These paper present preliminary results of a study conducted to determine the efficiency of two locally available organic materials namely, sand and murram in soil misure conservation when used as soil surface shields (Mulch) relative to establishment, survival and early growth of Senna siamea tree species. The results identified petrolinthite (murram to be superior when used as mulch alternative. However, logistic of its use by the farmers requires to be studied further and appropriate guidelines provided. For example, it may not be reasonable to introduce murram in farmland, but it can be used in raising valuable fruit trees around the compounds.
