In this paper, the practice of social forestry in relation its potential to contribution to rural development is discussed The key issue in relation of this potential are identified These are development of processing and market for the products of social forestry such as timber, and the whole rage of non-timber forestry products. This is in addition to forestry, certification of product, and the full accounting for the opportunity cost of all the household resources that are devoted by the participating households for social forestry activities. The importance of an appropriate policy and legal provision in support of the development of social forestry is highlighted
