The objectives of this were to (1) investigate the variation in wood density and shrinkage of the twelve hard wood species grows in Southern Kordofan (2) study the relationship between shrinkage and moisture content as influenced by wood density (3) study the relationship between wood density, shrinkage and anatomical characteristic. The wood shrinkages and densities of 12 species were determined using 30 specimens (3x3x10cm) for each species microscopic slides were prepared and the technique of stereology was applied on the transverse sections to obtain volume fractions and dimension for vessels, fibre, rays and parenchyma. Significant differences in wood density were found between species. The trends of shrinkage with decreasing moisture content could satisfactorily be explained by linear equations (shrinkage of the low density species started at higher moisture content values (47%) than the high density species (32%).
