Management of Boswellia papyrifera stands for resin production in Jebel Marra area, west Sudan : present situation and future prospects

This study is mainly management oriented, which was conducted in Boswellia papyrifera stands (19500 ha) in Jebel Mara Area, western Sudan, in low rainfall wood land savannah (500 900mm). The area covered in this study was 224 ha. Cluster systematic sampling technique with camp units is used, where two clusters with 84 sample plots (0.1 ha), were established. Boswellia papyrifera stands are 85.4% pore, with Boswellia papyrifera species dominating the stand. The results also showed that there are about 152 trees/ ha, 100 seedlings/ ha for regeneration. The results also revealed that most of the trees are concentrated in the diameter class ranges between, 12.0 46.9 cm. Average resin production per tree is 2.8 kg and 3500 kg per taper per season. The season of the resin tapping starts in September and ends in May.
