Qualitative and quantitative assessment of the current growing stock of Mtibwa Teak Plantation, Morogoro, Tanzania

A study was conducted to assess the quality and quantity of teak (Tectona grandis) grown at Mtibwa forest plantation in Tanzania. This was a follow up study after similar work done in 1986/87. A total of 110 plots were distributed in 6 compartments with respect to their size. Results showed that there was some improvement of quality in terms of straightness, roundness and combined quality (straightness and roundness) over that obtained in the last study. The improvement is attributed to selective thinning that was quite heavy resulting in most compartments having lower than recommended number of stems per hectare. Standing volume was lower than that obtained in the last study partly due to over-thinning. Encroachment and mortality also contributed to lower standing stock. It is recommended that thinning schedules are properly arranged and adhered-to to ensure both quality and quantity growth of the wood.
