Prospects for commercial utilization of lesser known timber species in Tanzania

Tanzania with 45% of its land under forest has more than 700 tree species. It is unfortunate that only a few well-known tree species are at present being utilized commercially. With the rapid depletion of the better known species it is essential to acquire more information on the properties of lesser known and lesser utilized tree species so as to technically and rationally assign them potential uses and promote them. The prospects for commercial utilization of lesser known timber species in Tanzania are discussed in this paperThe properties of five lesser known tree species are compared with those of better known. It is concluded that the lesser known and lesser utilized are sometimes of equivalent properties to those of better known tree species, but are less utilized because among other factors their properties and potential uses are poorly known. The importance of conducting research on lesser-known species is stressed.
