Potato response for long-term cultivation in specialized crop rotations

In 1993-96 a field experiment was conducted to study the long-term effect of increasing share of potato in crop rotation (from 25 to 100 percent) on the yielding level of tubers and starch. It was found that a higher potato share in sowing structure is associated with lower tubers yield, that is particularly evident in monoculture. Highest reductions in yields were in years with unprofitable weather conditions (drought). The effect of potato frequency in rotation on starch content was small. Only tubers from monoculture or from 2-year rotation (potato - rye) had reduced starch content in dry matter. Starch yield associated with tubers yield and starch content in confrontation to control crop rotation was significantly lower in monoculture
