Monitoring of some organochlorine pesticide residue in Mae Klang river

Some organochlorine pesticide residues in water samples from Mae Klang River have been monitored. Water samples were collected from 10 selected sites along the Mae Klang River from Doi Inthanon to Amphur Chom Thong Chiang Mai Province. The samples were collected in three seasons; summer (April), rainy (August) and cool season (December). Pesticide residues were extracted from 750 ml of water samples by using a mixture of 15 percent diethyl ether in n-hexane. Each sample solution was then concentrated and cleaned up through a glass column packed with anhydrous sodium sulphate, aluminium oxide and florisil followed by elution with 6 and 15 percent diethyl ether in petroleum ether. Quanlitative and quantitative analyses pesticide residues in the water samples were performed by gas liquid chromatography with an electron-capture detector (ECD) using a 2.6 m x 3.0 mm ID borosiligate glass column packed with GP 1.5 percent SP-2250 and 1.95 percent SP-2401 on 100-120 mesh supelcoport. The total concentrations of organochlorine pesticide residues in 30 samples in three seasons were 108.85 micro g/l. Benzenehexachlorides (BHC' s), cyclodienes and DDT' s were found in all samples. Their concentrations were 56.44 micro g/l (28 samples), 33.19 micro g/l (24 samples) and 18.03 micro g/l (24 samples) respectively.
