In vitro screening of prospective bacteria for sheath blight disease control and development of bacterial formulation

Soil samples were taken where paddy rice was cultivated from 14 provinces in the Southern part of Thailand. Bacteria were isolated from paddy rice soils using soil dilution plate method on King's medium B and Thornton's standardised medium. Isolation yielded 323 bacterial isolates which were subsequently tested for their effectiveness in inhibiting mycelial growth of Rhizoctonia solani, a causal agent of sheath blight of rice disease. Nine isolates were selected for their abilities in creating clear zone in the dual culture test. /Further tests were carried out to evaluate the effect of selected bacteria in inhibiting sclerotial germination and suppressing sheath blight lesion. Three bacteria isolates were selected as they could inhibit sclerotial germination and suppress sheath blight lesion better than other isolates. These bacterial isolates were later used for formulation study. Granulated formulation of these bacterial isolates is being developed to determine its efficacy in deterring sheath blight disease symptom in both greenhouse and field experiments.
