Study on various essential oil components isolated from the leaves of Piper muricatum Bl. and Piper ribesioides Wall. (Piperaceae) revealed the presence of 55 and 55 compounds respectively. Each species was isolated by hydrodistillation and examined by GC-MS. The leaves yield 0.05 and 0.15 percent (v/w) oil of fresh weight. (Z,E-)-Farnesyl acetate (33.26 percent), myristicin (21.42 percent), 9-epi-(E-)-caryophyllene (12.60 percent) and trans-nerolidol (35.85 percent), beta-caryophyllene (35.17 percent), bicyclogermacrene (5.09 percent) were found to be the major constituents respectively.
