Effects of source and rate of chicken manure on yield of cassava grown on sandy loam soil

Field experiment was conducted to study the effects of type and rate of chicken manure on cassava yield. It was carried out at Ubon Ratchathani Filed Crops Research Center in Ubon Ratchathani. Province, Thailand (15 degree 14 lipda N, 105 degree 02 lipda E) in sandy loam soil between May 2000 and March 2002. The experiment was designed in RCB with 3 replications. The treatments were applications. Of small pellet chicken manure (SCM) at a rate of 50, 100 and 200 kg/rai, large pellet chicken manure (LCM) at a rate of 50, 100 and 200 kg/rai, non-pellet chicken manure (NCM) at a rate of 200, 400 and 800 kg/rai. These chicken manure treatments were compared to chemical fertilizer (CF) application (7.5-7.5-7.5 kg/rai of N-P2 O5-K20) and control (non-fertilization) treatments. Chicken manure was broadcasted and then incorporated into the soil prior to planting cassava. Cassava variety Rayong 5 was planted 1*1 m in spacing. The results showed that the application of MCM at 800 kg/rai significantly produced the highest fresh root yield (4,193-4,976 kg/rai), dry chip yield (1,559-1,592 kg/rai) and starch yield (1,056-1,060 kg/rai). These were about 122-126, 121-151 and 130-149 percent, respectively, higher than control treatment. The increase of cassava yield was responded by the increase in number of roots and root weight per plant. The application of MCM at 800 kg/rai was profitable since it gave marginal rate of return (MRM) at 205 and 599 percent in 2000 and 2001, respectively. However, there was no clear effect of chicken manure on starch content of the roots and the soil properties.
