Semen qualities and effect of sperm number per egg on fertilization rate of some freshwater fishes

Semen qualities of Common silver barb, Common carp and Walking catfish were evaluated and then the effect of sperm number per egg (4*10**(4), 6*10**(4), 8*10**(4) and 10*10**(4) cells/egg) on their fertilization was studied by artificial fertilization. Semen collection of Walking catfish could not be done directly as the other two, therefore, its testis had to be pressed into the 5 ml of normal saline. The results showed that the semen of Common silver barb and Common carp increased significantly by fish weight, their average of sperm concentration were 27,170*10**(6) and 32,115*10**(6) cells/ml, respectively. For Walking catfish, testis weight was found to be increased significantly by fish weight, and its average of sperm concentration in normal saline was 1,887*10**(6) cells/ml. Artificial fertilization of Common silver barb, Common carp and Walking catfish, their sperm motility were 90, 90 and 80 percent, respectively. It was shown that fertilization percentages in Common silver barb and Walking catfish were not significantly different in any tested sperm concentration. For Common carp, the sperm concentration had an effect on its fertilization. However, the concentration above 6*10**(4) cells/egg gave no differences on fertilization.
