Experiment was conducted in a farmer field in Ban Muang Yai Village, Muang District, Khon Kaen Province in 1999. The objective of this study was to determine growth and yields of munghean, cowpea and soybean planted before rice in the upper paddy, middle paddy and lower paddy fields. The results showed that leaf area index, total top dry weight and grain yields of the three legumes were the highest when the crops were planted in the upper paddy fields. The most adverse effects on these characters were detected when the crops were planted in the lower paddy fields. However, there was no significant difference in leaf area index, total top dry weight and grain yields between crops grown in upper paddy and middle paddy fields. The lowest plant growth and grain yields were obtained when the legumes were planted in the lower paddy field. This was due to the crops suffering from waterlogging during the growing season.
