Utilization of sweet corn residues and baby-corn husk ensiling with urea and molasses for dairy heifers

Experiment was conducted to evaluate the nutritive value of ensiled corn residues and effect on growth performance of dairy heifers. Sweet corn stover and baby corn husk were ensiled with various levels of palm kernel meal and/or urea and molasses as follows: T1 = grass hay was provided ad lib. (control), T2 = corn stover ensiled with 10 percent palm kernel meal, T3 = corn stover ensiled with 0.5 percent molasses + 0.5 percent urea, T4 = corn stover ensiled with 1.0 percent molasses + 1.0 percent urea, T5 = baby corn husk ensiled with 0.5 percent molasses + 0.5 percent urea and T6 = baby corn husk ensiled with 1.0 percent molasses + 1.0 percent urea. Six dairy heifers were fed with the roughages ad lib in 6*6 Latin square design and each animal was supplemented with 13.74 percent CP concentrate mixture (2.00 kg/day). The results showed that the DM of sweet corn stover silages were higher (35.52 26.78 26.50 percent vs 12.50 12.40 percent) but had lower CP (12.13 13.40 11.90 percent vs 14.71 15.89 percent) than baby-corn husk silages. The growth performance of heifers was highest in a group fed with sweet corn stover ensiled with 10 percent palm kernel meal (solv.). The animals received sweet corn stover and baby-corn husk ensiled with 1.0 percent molasses + 1.0 percent urea showed a tendency of better growth performance than those received 0.5 percent molasses + 0.5 percent urea (0.55 and 0.47 vs 0.41 and 0.29 Kg/day).
