Use of baby-corn husk ensiling with some agro-industrial by-products as roughage for male dairy calves

Experiment was conducted to evaluate the nutritive value of silage ensiled with different kind of agro-industrial by-products and its effects on fattening performance of male dairy calves. Six male dairy calves were fed with 1 percent molasses + 1 percent urea, 1 percent molasses + 2 percent urea, 1 percent molasses + 4 percent urea, 10 percent ricebran, 10 percent palm kernel cake and 10 percent palm kernel meal (solv.) in 6*6 Latin Square Design. The calves were individually fed with baby-corn husk silage (10 percent body weight/day) and 2 Kg of 13.74 percent CP concentrate mixture per day. The results showed that the baby-corn husk ensiling (at day 21) with ricebran, palm kernel cake and palm kernel meal (solv.) had more optimum pH (3.61 3.75 and 4.21) than the others. The IVDMD of baby-corn husk ensiling with palm kernel meal (solv.) was highest (59.14 percent). The average daily gain and daily feed intake were significantly difference between the 6 treatments (P0.05). The authors feel that the animals received baby-corn husk ensiled with 10 percent palm kernel meal (solv.) showed better growth performance and the feed cost than the others.
