Study on botanical characteristics of edible rattan (Daemonorops angustifolia (Griff.) Mart.)

Study on botanical characteristics of edible rattan in Sakhon Nakhon province during July, 1994 to August, 1997. The results, revealed that the edible rattan is Daemonorops angustifolia clustering with 3.5-4.0 cm diameter clum and 2.5-2.8 cm diameter rattan cane. Spiny leaf sheath 65-70 cm long with knee appeared at matured plant. Rachis 320-350 cm long with cirrus, leaflet 190-200 per rachis, lanceolate, 1.5-1.8 cm width, 30-46 cm long. Inflorescence bract boat-shaped 30-35 cm long and 5-10 cm width, dioecious pleoanthic flowering. Female and male flower with 3 sepal and 3 petal, female size 2.5 mm width and 5 mm long, male size 1.5 mm width and 2.5 mm long. Fruit 0.8 cm width and 1.0 cm long covered with vertical rows of reflexed overlapping scales which turn to be light yellow or cream when ripe. The embryo size is 0.5*1.0 mm. Lie in shallow pit laterally in homogenocour endosperm.
