An evaluation of honey in relation to beekeeping importance in Wetern Ghat of Karnataka State, India was carried out during 1992-1995. The Western Ghat forest area has rich honey sources for commercil beekeeping. The type of bee forage and their blooming period has been provided. The nectar-sugar concentration of nectar yielding plants was determined. The honeybees, Apis dorsata F, A. cerena indica F. and A. florea F. in Western Ghat forests are well distributed. The paper suggests that the Western Ghat forest area has rich diversified honey sources and there is tremendous scope for taking up an intergrated beekeeping development programme by involving forest dwellers, particulary women, unemployed youths and form workers for sustainable forest management. A strategy for reducing the pressure on the forests and formulation of integrated programmes to introduce beekeeping on a large scale to produce large quantities of honey and other bee-products by utilizing the existing honey sources is proposed.
